About Bali...

Bali is an Indonesian province and island east of Java and west of Lombok. It is the most western of the Sunda Islands. The island measures 5561 km ², and has 3,216,881 inhabitants (2002). Nearly 90% are native Balinese, mostly Hindu and speak Indonesian or Balinese. The capital is Denpasar. Singaraja was the capital until 1958.
Of old existed several independent principalities on Bali. In 1597 entered the first Dutch (the brothers Cornelis and Frederik de Houtman) the island, but it was only since the mid 19th century that the island came gradually under Dutch rule. The final, bloody subjugation happened in 1906, after the Balinese nobility in Badung (men, women and children) commited Perang Poepoetan (suicide) by entering only armed with kris and klewang into enemy fire.
Before the Second World War, some europeans painters settled down on the island, including Walter Spies. They were inspired by the Balinese art, but art underwent its Western influence, particularly in woodcarving and painting. The Belgian artist Le Mayeur is an example of this. In Sanur is a museum which can be visited where many of his works are.
Bali makes part of the Republic of Indonesia since the inception of this republic in 1945. Bali is the 27th province. It is the biggest tourist attraction in the country.
